Professional Background


Janet Elie Faulkner is a highly skilled attorney focusing on legal work for employers, companies, universities, and non-profit institutions. Janet's practice specializes in employment law, education law, and data privacy. Janet provides legal services to institutions and companies that do not have a general counsel; lack the bandwidth to staff all of their in-house legal needs; or seek to reduce the costs typically associated with outside law firms. She has over twenty years of experience as in-house counsel to major Boston institutions.

​Janet began her career in the
employment & litigation departments of a mid-size Boston law firm. She then held in-house legal positions specializing in employment law, where she gained intensive hands-on legal experience. Through her work at the City of Boston's School Department and the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority, Janet handled high-volume caseloads of employment discrimination and arbitration claims before Massachusetts courts, government agencies, and private arbitrators. She also was closely involved in policy development and strategyfor her organizations' federal contractor compliance obligations, and development of policy & best practices under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA).

Beginning in 2000, Janet served as the
first in-house general counsel for Emerson College, where she established Emerson's legal office. Janet represented Emerson in all aspects of employment law, and provided legal advice about copyright, contracts,
athletics, and data privacy. Janet then served as Senior Assistant General Counsel for Northeastern University for over ten years. She continued to provide specialized legal guidance and representation in employment, nondiscrimination, and disability law. Her practice as a generalist further expanded to handle scientific research, health care, and social media matters. Data privacy issues, including HIPAA and Massachusetts data privacy regulations, comprised an important part of her practice. Janet has achieved the CIPP/US certification in U.S. law on Information Privacy from the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP). IAPP is the premier private organization devoted to data protection and information privacy.

Janet earned a Bachelor's Degree from Cornell University in industrial and labor relations, and her J.D. from Boston College Law School. She is admitted to practice in state and federal courts in Massachusetts, ​the New York State courts and the U.S. Supreme Court. Janet engages in professional activities​ for business associations, including the Boston Bar Association, the National Association of College and University Attorneys (NACUA), the New England Labor Council (NELC), the Reading-North Reading Chamber of Commerce, and the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP).
